CARLOSTURANITE

Val Varaita, near Sempeyre, Piedmont, Italy (type locale)
Carlosturanite is a fairly recently described member of the Amphibole group, first found at this locality in 1991.  Its habit is asbestiform, with flexible fibers found in some specimens up to several centimeters in length.  Color is light brown, with a vitreous luster.  Chemical composition is (Mg,Fe,Ti,Mn,Cr)21(Si,Al)12O28(OH)34.H2O.

Type 1 – Aggregates of pure asbestiform / fibrous, light tan color Carlosturanite without matrix.

Type 2 – Same as above, aggregates of pure asbestiform / fibrous, light tan color Carlosturanite with rock matrix.  Due to the long, fibrous nature of this new mineral, matrix specimens are apparently more difficult to recover than examples without matrix.
