RIEBECKITE Var. Crocidolite in Ironstone
Griekwastad, Northern Cape Province, Republic of South Africa
These very interesting specimens show a cross section of the banded ironstone matrix, with each specimen exhibiting two or more of the “blue asbestos” cross-fiber veinlets cutting through the banded, yellowish-brown to smoky gray ironstone matrix.  Note that on some of the specimens, the “blue asbestos” veins vary in width.  This unusual feature is particularly obvious on items E., F., H., I., J., and K, which exhibit a distinct “scalloping” of the width of one or more of the veins.  Items J. and K. are particularly large specimens, so the gram weights are given here as a measure of size, however, the specimens are not priced by the gram.  J. = 738.0 grams (= 1.63 pounds), and K. = 1,645.0 grams (= 3.63 pounds).
