General physical features of the Fulgurites from
Great Sand Sea, Libyan Desert, Southwestern Egypt

TYPE II  (Thin walled, tubular)

OUTSIDE SURFACE:
FORM: All specimens are fairly straight, thin walled, tubular.  Some specimens have lace-like openings in the side walls of the tubes.  This is the result of the high heat of the lightning bolt blasting through the side walls of the tubes, during formation.  Both ends open on all specimens.
COLOR: Light gray-tan to pale charcoal color.
TEXTURE: Fairly smooth, sometimes with small protuberances.  Minimal, to no sand granules adhering.
SAND GRANULES: Practically nonexistent, i.e., the sand granules were mostly fused by the very high heat, during formation.
GLASSY INTERIOR:
COLOR: Colorless to pale smoky gray, transparent to translucent.
TEXTURE: Smooth, glassy.
BUBBLES  (GAS
POCKETS)  PRESENT:
Microscopic, sparse.
