General physical features of the Fulgurites from
Great Sand Sea, Libyan Desert, Southwestern Egypt

TYPE III (Light colored, fused silica tubes)

OUTSIDE SURFACE:
FORM: Fairly straight, with a slight curvature down the length on some specimens.  Nearly equidimensional to slightly flattened in cross section, tubular, usually with very pronounced, often convoluted ridges.  Each specimen has the tube open on both ends.
COLOR: Light tan to smoky gray.
TEXTURE: Rough, with small protuberances and/or ridges running lengthwise down the tubes.
SAND GRANULES:

Modest amount, sometimes practically nonexistent, i.e., the sand granules were mostly fused during formation.

GLASSY INTERIOR:
COLOR: Light tan to light smoky gray, translucent / opaque.
TEXTURE: Smooth, glassy.
BUBBLES  (GAS
POCKETS)  PRESENT:
Numerous, microscopic.
