EXOGENIC FULGURITES
Elko County, Nevada

A new class of fulgurites was first documented after a spectacular find was made in 1997 in a remote area in Elko County, Nevada.  The find was written up in “Rocks & Minerals” magazine, by Jerry W. Mohling , Volume 79, Issue 5, 2004, Pages 334-340.  The three specimens offered below are from the original 1997 find described in the magazine. Two basic fulgurite types were found at this site:

  1. Shiny black molten fulgurite glass (exogenic fulgurites) thrown into the air, formed as a result of the expanding, superheated gases produced by the lightning strike.
  2. Traditional tubular fulgurite material formed slightly below the natural soil and gravel surface of the hillside at the impact site.
