NEW FIND!    COMBINATIONS OF ROCK AND SAND FULGURITES FROM CENTRAL CALIFORNIA

A recent discovery (Spring 2014) of a new fulgurite locality in central California has yielded examples of the traditional Fulgurites formed in sand or silica-rich soil, usually with hollow, tubular forms and frequently as branching formations.  Due to the heat intensity of some of the lightning bolts discharged in this area, the molten silica-rich material that was produced subsequently entrapped small pebbles and cobbles in some of the Fulgurite specimens, before cooling.  That is, the lightning bolts struck very close to where the small rounded pebbles were lying on the surface of the ground, and the molten silica Fulgurites were subsequently attached to the rocks, upon cooling.  One can see light colored zones near the point of attachment, on some specimen, where scorch marks were produced due to localized super heating of the rocks.  In addition to the rounded pebbles found in this area, light colored Granite (Quartz / Feldspar / Mica) pebbles were also present.  The Granite seems to have been less stable and as result, natural weathering processes have reduced much of the Granite to small, white, very coarse fragments (relict Quartz / Feldspar).  These white fragments are very obvious, embedded in the tubes in FUL-1059, FUL-1060, FUL-1062, FUL-1063 and FUL-1065.   All sizes are given in inches.  Pricing is @ +/- $2.00 to $2.50 / gram for tubular specimens.  Specimens with larger rocks attached are priced considerably lower, to make adjustments for the weights of the attached rocks.

The person responsible for recovering these unique specimens has provided color photos of the recovery of one of the branched fulgurites.  Note that this fulgurite was formed near the edge of a creek see the second photo.
