FULGURITES

Myrtle Creek, Douglas County, Oregon

Thor, the ancient god of thunder and lightning, must have been having one of his better days when the fulgurites on this page were formed!  The fulgurites illustrated here were formed in 1998, as a result of a tremendous electrical storm.  Myrtle Creek is in a rural, mountainous part of Douglas County at the base of the Cascade Range in southwestern Oregon.  Individual descriptions of three large specimens follow.  Items A. and B. have natural rounded, stream-worn pebbles / rocks incorporated into the fused silica.  This part of Oregon is volcanic in nature.  The body of each of these specimens is composed of fused silica – the primary make-up being fine-grained, dark gray basalt.  Individual descriptions follow:

MYR-01    General physical features:

OUTSIDE SURFACE:

Form

Large open tube with a small branch protruding from the back of the specimen.

Color:

Charcoal gray.

Texture:

Rough, with many small irregularities.

Sand Granules:

None present.

Rocks attached:

One large rock, measuring 4 1/2” long X 2 1/2” wide X 2” thick, attached to the side of the fulgurite tube, best seen in view MYR-01 B.

GLASSY INTERIOR:

Color:

Very shiny black, mixed with dark yellow-gray.

Texture:

Very smooth and shiny.

Bubbles (Gas Pockets) Present:

Numerous, from micro size up to 1/2”.  The two largest open gas pockets on the front of the specimen each measure 1/2” across.  At the exit end of the lightning strike, a large gas bubble 1 1/4” X 7/8” across, plus several smaller bubbles up to 1/2” across, are also present (View MYR-01C).

MYR-02    General physical features:

OUTSIDE SURFACE:

Form:

Spectacular, large fulgurite tube with one end open, with the very shiny black glassy interior exposed for a length of 3”.   The fulgurite tube is 4 1/2” long overall, and 2” wide.

Color:

Charcoal gray.

Texture:

Rough, with many small irregularities.

Sand Granules:

None present.

Rocks Attached:

One large rock attached, measuring 2 3/4” X 2 1/2”, partially split by the force of the lightning strike.  Several smaller rocks and pebbles are also attached to the outside of the fulgurite tube.

GLASSY INTERIOR:

Color:

Very shiny black, mixed with dark yellow-gray.

Texture:

Very smooth and shiny.

Bubbles (Gas Pockets) Present:

Numerous, from micro size up to 5/8”.  The two largest open gas pockets on the front of the specimen measure 1/2” and 5/8” across.  On the closed end of the fulgurite tube (back view, shown in View B), the two open gas pockets measure 3/8” and 1/2”, formed in the center of the tube.

5 1/4” tall, 2 3/4” wide, and 3” thick.

MYR-03    General physical features:

OUTSIDE SURFACE:

Form:

Tubular, with one end open, and multi-exit form, i.e., 4 exit ports.  The fulgurite tube is 6” long and 2” in diameter at the top end of the lightning strike, slightly curved.  The opening at the main exit port is 1/2” X 3/4” diameter.

Color:

Charcoal gray.

Texture:

Rough, with many small irregularities.

Sand Granules:

None present.

Rocks Attached:

One rock fragment is attached, split by the force of the lightning strike.  Size: 2 1/8” X 1 1/2” X +/- 1/4” thick.

GLASSY INTERIOR:

Color:

Very shiny black, mixed with dark yellow-gray.

Texture:

Very smooth and shiny.

Bubbles (Gas Pockets) Present:

Numerous, from micro size up to 3/8”.  The two largest open gas pockets on the front of the specimen measure 1/4” and 3/8” across. 

SPECIMEN SIZE:

6 1/4” long, and 3 1/2” X 2  3/4” diameter.
