A new generation of low cost digital microscope camera is now a reality!  These cameras are designed for ease of use and are full compatibility with most microscopes and personal computers running current operating systems.  Resolutions are available from 1.3 to 14 megapixels.  Installation is as easy as removing one of your eyepieces and replacing it with the camera, as the relay lens is built into the camera.  For trinocular C-mount microscopes a simple phototube adapter and relay lens may be required if your phototube is not a standard eyepiece size.  We can fabricate custom adaptors, at reasonable prices, in our fully equipped machine shop.  Please contact us for custom adaptors.  These cameras provide live video on your computer, or video projector, to facilitate focusing, positioning of specimen and live demonstrations as well as to capture still and video sequences.

CMOS vs. CCD Sensors
For all but low light applications,  ECMOS sensors are equivalent in performance to CCD sensors.  Almost all consumer and professional digital cameras now employ ECMOS sensors.  However, for low light applications, such as dark field or fluorescent studies, CCD sensors do provide greater sensitivity.  Sensitivity is also a function of pixel size.  For either CMOS or CCD sensors, lower resolution cameras will have greater sensitivity than higher resolution sensors, because of their larger pixel size.  If you are unsure as to which sensor best suits your needs, an applications engineer is available to assist you.  1-408-923-6800

The all new design University Grade EM Series Cameras utilize an Aptina enhanced color CMOS sensor, which interfaces to your Windows PC via a high speed USB 2.0 connection.  The cameras are compatible with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 operating systems, 32 and 64 bit. 

These standalone cameras provide resolutions from 1.3MP to 14MP without using additional image capture cards.  Automatic control over exposure and color balance, as well as manual control of all camera parameters, is provided in the software.  The University Series provides full screen displays that are only limited by the best resolution that your monitor can provide.

The sophisticated software allows you to preview live images, record videos, capture still images, edit images or save them in BMP, JPG, PICT, TFT and other formats very easily.  Other features allow for measurement of length, angle, area and more.  Upgrades are free!

REQUIREMENTS FOR C-MOUNT CAMERAS
To use a C-Mount camera on your microscope, your scope must have a trinocular, or photo port, with a male C-Mount thread adapter.  The male C-Mount standard is 1"OD X 32 TPI (threads per inch). 

Also, the microscope must have a relay lens, sometimes called a projection eyepiece, installed in the trinocular port.  The relay lens should be in the range of 0.4X to 0.6X for the camera field of view to be approximately the same as the field of view seen when looking through the microscope.  For most modern scopes, the C-Mount adapter and relay lens are integrated into one part.

Both the C-Mount adapter and the relay lens are proprietary and are usually only available from the microscope manufacturer.
