MOLDAVITE
GEMSTONES
Trebic, Moravia, Czech Republic
Moldavites have been found at several localities within the Bohemia
and Moravia regions of the Czech Republic. The Moldavite gems available
here have been cut by a master faceter, and all are from the Trebic area in
Moravia. All have excellent, medium to dark olive, to bottle green color,
and very good to superb transparency. All are suitable for mounting in fine
jewelry, and would also make a meaningful additional to any collection of
rare gemstones. Hardness is between 5.5 and 6.5, as noted in the “Color
Encyclopedia of Gemstones”, 2nd Edition, Dr. Joel Arem, P. 186
(1987). Other well-known gemstones of similar hardness are: Benitoite,
Lapis Lazuli, Opal, and Turquoise. Collectors of Tektites, Moldavites, and
Meteorites will find these of special allure because of their unusual mode
of formation and distinctive color, as well as their great beauty.
Moldavites are only found in the Czech Republic. Scientific dating of
Moldavites places their age at about 14.8 million years. Examination of
these stones with 10-15X magnification reveals microscopic bubbles within
the body of the glass. Bubbles are found in all Tektite groups and these
faceted gems clearly show the characteristic microscopic, entrapped bubbles
and flow lines. The paper entitled “Tektites” by V. Barnes, Chapter 16 in
the book by the same name, P. 127-138 (1975) gives much valuable,
interesting data on the various physical characteristics of Moldavites. In
addition to the discussion on natural bubbles and flow structure, the author
presents interesting information on the origin of all of the members of the
Tektite group including Australites, Bediasites, Moldavites, Philippinites,
etc. If you are interested in receiving a copy of this data for your
reference library, please ask and a copy of this information will be sent
with any order for one of the Moldavites gemstones listed below. A copy of
the data from the “Color Encyclopedia of Gemstones” will also be included.
Certificates of authenticity are also available. Pricing of the Moldavite
gemstones varies, dependent upon the following:
Faceted gemstones (items ME-801 through ME-808)
$10. to $12. / carat Gemstone has excellent color and good
to very good transparency, with lots of microscopic bubble inclusions and
flow lines. This quality is excellent for reference or study collection.
$16. to $18. / carat Gemstone has excellent color and fine
transparency, with a modest amount of microscopic bubble inclusions and flow
lines.
$20. / carat Gemstone has excellent color and
superb transparency, with very minor microscopic bubble inclusions and flow
lines.
Cabochons (items ME-809 through ME-814)
Each of the cabochons has one natural (uncut) surface, and one faceted
or smooth polished surface. These are highly desirable for either rings
where the owner likes to display the natural rough surface of the Moldavite,
or for pendants where the bezel wraps around the perimeter of the stone and
allows the wearer to display either the natural surface, or the cut surface.
$3. to $6. / carat Cabochon has excellent color and good,
to fine translucency, with varying amounts of microscopic inclusions and
flow lines.
